OLAE Finance and Investment Roundtable: Do European SMEs have any future?
Tuesday, October 27, morning (9am-12pm)
Maritim Hotel & Conference Center, Dresden, Germany
(As part of 5th Global Plastic Electronics Conference and Exhibition 27-29 October 2009)
While many investors tend to agree with developers on the relative advantages and the long-term market potential of plastic electronics with respect to silicon-based electronics, the long and capital-intensive development cycles and market readiness concerns have caused some investors to hold back.
The difficulty of receiving seed-stage funding is a particular problem. Discussions with investors suggest that generally low (i.e. 'lower-than-expected') returns on seed-stage investments during the past ten years have discouraged investors from directing more money into seed-stage companies.
The roundtable will provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss the latest and expected future development trends in finance and investment in the field of plastic electronics. A particular objective of the roundtable is to explore alternative survival strategies, such as public-private partnerships, for European start-ups and SMEs.
The roundtable is hosted by Dr. Jelto Kromwijk Smits of Prime Technology Ventures. The programme is built around invited presentations, a group work session and a plenary discussion.
Objective and key themes
Scarcity of seed-stage funding, coping strategies
Financing seed-stage versus growth companies: perceived risks, ROI expectations, investment time span
The future prospects of European SMEs in OLAE, Europe's position vis-à-vis the USA and Asia
What should be done, what can we do?
Programme:
10 min. Opening remarks from the Chair - Dr. Jelto Kromwijk Smits, Prime Technology Ventures, The Netherlands
20 min. The entrepreneur perspective
20 min. The VC perspective
20 min. Is there any future for European OLAE? - A case for public-private partnerships - Ed van den Kieboom, CEO, The Plastic Electronics Foundation, The Netherlands
15 min. Refreshment break
1hr 15 min. Roundtable discussion on the above topics
20 min. Plenary discussion and close of session - Dr. Jelto Kromwijk Smits, Prime Technology Ventures, The Netherlands, & Ed van den Kieboom, CEO, The Plastic Electronics Foundation, The Netherlands
If you have any questions or wish to register please contact Jari kettunen on jari.kettunen@vtt.fi
